CHOCOLATE BLACKBERRY BOMB SMOOTHIE
/For a real chocolatey explosion, I like to use a good amount of raw cacao in this easy, nutritious & delicious chocolate blackberry smoothie.
Blackberries have a wonderful sweet-tart flavour. They are low in carbs, but rich in vitamins as well as soluble and insoluble fibre. Better still, blackberries are absolutely bursting with chronic-disease & age-fighting antioxidants including lutein & zeaxanthin.
Cacao is the purest form of chocolate we can consume. It is free of all the refined sugar and other additives found in most processed chocolate.
Cacao is loaded with minerals such as magnesium & iron. It is also rich in health-promoting flavonoid antioxidants, which are believed to help reduce the risk of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, & cancer.
Furthermore, consumption boosts natural feel-good chemicals in our bodies such as serotonin and phenylethylamine (PEA). PEA is the same neurotransmitter that is released when we fall in love!!
For 2 servings, blend together until smooth:
2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond or nut-free milk (see note below*)
2 handfuls fresh baby spinach
2 Tbsp Nuzest Clean Lean Smooth Vanilla (here) or Rich Chocolate protein powder (see note below*)
2 Tbsp Giddy Yo raw cacao powder
2 Tbsp chia seeds (optional)
2 to 3 standard ice cubes if using fresh berries (optional)
Lakanto sugar-free monk fruit sweetener, pure stevia, or raw honey (non-vegan), adjusted to taste (optional)
*Notes: I typically make this smoothie with part almond milk and part canned full-fat coconut milk for extra creaminess and healthy fats. Another great option is to use frozen avocado chunks (1/4 avocado per serving). If you prefer to avoid protein powder, consider adding 1/2 cup Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or silken tofu.
