Family taco night is always a hit at my house. I love to make my own seasoning for these delicious turkey tacos. Not only is it super easy, but I can adjust the heat and spices to taste and avoid the excessive salt and additives found in most store bought versions!

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Feel free to make a double or triple batch and reserve for your next taco night!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp chili powder

  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1 tsp sea salt

  • 1/2 tsp cayenne powder

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Directions: Mix spices together in a small bowl. Homemade Taco Seasoning can be used immediately or stored in an airtight container for future recipes.

Turkey Tacos

This recipe is extremely versatile and family-friendly. I have made it with ground turkey and chicken as well as a combination of turkey and beef. The taco filling is great in both hard and soft shells as well as lettuce cups or roasted squash “bowls”. Alternatively, it can be used as a topping for salad, nachos, zoodles, baked sweet potatoes, or even toast!

Ingredients for 3 to 4 servings (2 tacos each):

  • spray avocado oil (or other cooking spray)

  • 1 lb naturally-raised ground turkey or chicken (see note above)

  • 1 to 2 Tbsp homemade taco seasoning (we use 2 because we like a little heat!)

  • 2 Tbsp chicken bone broth powder (optional, if not using bone broth)

  • 1/2 tsp arrowroot powder (optional, to thicken)

  • 1/2 cup bone broth (or water)

  • shell options: tortillas, hard shells, or lettuce wraps

  • optional toppings: shredded lettuce and/or cabbage and/or carrots, diced tomato, microgreens, dairy or non-dairy cheese, sauerkraut, salsa, sliced avocado or guacamole, or toppings of choice

Directions:

  1. Heat a large skillet (I prefer cast iron) over medium heat and spray with avocado oil.

  2. Add ground turkey and cook until browned, approximately 5 to 6 minutes, stirring to crumble.

  3. Sprinkle with taco seasoning (1 Tbsp for mild or more for spicer tacos — we like to use 2!), bone broth powder (if using), and arrowroot powder. Stir well to combine.

  4. Add bone broth or water and cook 4 or 5 minutes until thickened and meat cooked through.

  5. Serve in your choice of taco shell or salad bowl with toppings as desired.
