Busy week ahead?  What if I told you that in just a few minutes this evening you could prep a delicious & nutritious breakfast — coffee & chocolate included — that would be ready to go for the rest of the week?

Yup!  That’s the beauty of these make-ahead protein oats.  Honestly, there are few breakfasts as simple & satisfying.  You just mix the ingredients together the night before & they soak while you sleep.

This M&M porridge has been a huge hit with all my taste-testers.  It’s super yummy and absolutely packed with vitamins & minerals, antioxidants, fibre, healthy fats, protein, and energizing adaptogens, too!

Crazy for Cacao

The “chocolate” in here is actually cacao.  Cacao is the purest form of chocolate we can consume.  It is free of all the unhealthy sugar and other additives found in most processed chocolate.  Better still, cacao is loaded with minerals such as magnesium and iron, as well as health-promoting flavonoids.  These powerful antioxidants are believed to help reduce the risk of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

And raw cacao actually makes us feel good!  It has probiotic effects and has been shown to interact with the gut-brain-axis to trigger the release of natural feel-good chemicals in our bodies such as serotonin and phenylethylamine (PEA).  PEA is the same neurotransmitter that is released when we fall in love!

In the Mood for Maca

Maca is a great superfood booster and its slightly earthy, butterscotch taste blends well with chocolate and coffee.  In addition to providing extra vitamins and minerals, maca is recognized as a herbal "adaptogen".  This means it helps the body to regulate cortisol levels and deal with stress.  And I used that expression for a reason!  Maca may actually help to relieve anxiety while boosting mood, energy, concentration, and even libido.

Recipe for M&M Overnight Proats

Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 2/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (gluten-free if needed)

  • 1 Tbsp chia seeds

  • 1 Tbsp shelled hemp seeds (gluten-free if needed or use a second Tbsp chia seeds)

  • 2 Tbsp Further Food regular or chocolate collagen OR Nuzest Clean Lean Smooth Vanilla or Rich Chocolate protein powder OR 1 Tbsp of each

  • 1 1/3 cups unsweetened plant-based milk (I like to use half full-fat coconut milk for an extra creamy porridge)

  • 2 shots espresso, regular or decaffeinated (optional)

  • 1 to 2 Tbsp Giddy Yo raw cacao powder, adjusted to taste

  • 2 tsp Plant Burst or Organika maca powder

  • Lakanto sugar-free monk fruit sweetener, pure stevia, pitted and finely diced Medjool dates, or sweetener or choice, adjusted to taste

  • optional toppings: fresh or dried fruit, granola, dark chocolate, bee pollen, toasted coconut chips, nuts/seeds, peanut or nut or granola butter, or toppings of choice

Directions:

  1. Put oats, chia seeds, hemp seeds, collagen and/or protein powder, milk, espresso, cacao, and maca in a bowl or divide evenly into single-serving mason jars. Stir well to combine and sweeten to taste.

  2. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for a minimum of 6 hours.

Serve chilled or heated with your choice of toppings. M&M Overnight Proats can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 5 days.
