CITRUSY SUPERSTAR SMOOTHIE

This light and refreshing red grapefruit & raspberry smoothie gets an extra nutrition boost from the addition of açaí and baobab powders (optional).

Grapefruit is rich in minerals, fibre and vitamins including vitamin C.  The pink and red varieties get their lovely hue from lycopene, a carotenoid phytonutrient that has been found to have powerful anti-cancer effects.  Ruby reds are in peak season in the southern United States from November until May.

Açaí berries are dark purple fruits that are harvested from palm trees in the Amazon jungle.  They are extremely rich in antioxidants, including anthocyanins, as well as heart-healthy fats, essential minerals, and dietary fibre.  Açaí berry powder may not live up to all the miracle weight loss hype in the media, but consumption is believed to reduce inflammation, and promote skin, cognitive and digestive health.

Baobab powder is made from the dried fruit of the baobab tree.  It has a wonderful tangy, citrusy flavour and is unusually rich in fibre (including prebiotic fibre), vitamin C, and antioxidants.  It is packed with minerals, including potassium, magnesium, and calcium, making it a great addition to any post-workout shake.  Baobab consumption is believed to promote fat burning and liver detoxification, and may improve skin (anti-aging), gut and immune health.
