BLUE MATCHA SMOOTHIE

This probiotic kefir-based blueberry & matcha smoothie is a nutritional powerhouse!  It is full of antioxidants from the berries and green tea as well as healthy fats, fibre, and protein.

Why Matcha?

Matcha green tea powder is loaded with inflammation & disease-fighting compounds including the subgroup of antioxidants called catechins.  One particular catechin, EGCg, is widely recognized for its anti-cancer properties.  Matcha is also used to induce a sense of calm while simultaneously boosting energy, concentration, memory and metabolism.  I have added a squeeze of lime here since research shows that citrus promotes the absorption of antioxidants from the matcha!

And just what is Kefir?

Kefir is a fermented drink with a yogurt-like taste and lots of immune-boosting and disease-fighting benefits.  It contains bioactive compounds that can improve gut and skin health, and help to reduce the risk of cancer and allergy symptoms.  One compound found only in kefir, known as kefiran, has been found to fight against candida, a common yeast infection.

Smoothie Recipe

For one serving, blend together until smooth:

  • 1 cup dairy or nondairy kefir (I used coconut kefir), adjusted to desired consistency

  • 1/2 to 1 cup frozen blueberries

  • 1 Tbsp chia seeds

  • 1/2 to 1 tsp matcha powder, adjusted to taste

  • juice from 1/2 lime

  • Lakanto sugar-free monk fruit, raw honey (nonvegan), or pure stevia, adjusted to taste

To make a BLUE-GREEN MATCHA smoothie, simply add a handful of fresh baby spinach or kale.

If serving as a meal or more substantial snack, add a source of protein.  Good options include one or more of the following:

  • 1 to 2 Tbsp Further Food collagen peptides (nonvegan)

  • 1 to 2 Tbsp Nuzest Clean Lean Smooth Vanilla or Just Natural protein powder

  • 2 Tbsp Eaton Hemp hemp seeds (gluten free if needed)

  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
